Narendra Modi has been the Prime Minister of India since 2014, and he’s known around the world as one of the most famous politicians in the world today. His name has become synonymous with politics in India, and his policies and persona are well-known to people from all over the world. What makes Narendra Modi so famous? Read on to find out more about this ambitious politician and why he’s considered one of the best leaders in recent history.
Early Life
What sets him apart is that, as opposed to most politicians (apart from Barack Obama), Modi has never held elected office. Modi began his career in politics by joining a right-wing Hindu nationalist organization called Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). But while he rose quickly through its ranks—eventually becoming its general secretary—he spent his early career in party administration. In fact, despite now being one of India’s most recognizable figures and a powerful head of state, Modi was an anonymous politician until 2001 when he became Chief Minister of Gujarat. Interestingly enough, back then he had to change his name because people thought it was odd for someone named Narendra to be running for office.
Becoming Chief Minister
After being elected as Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001, he went to visit Pakistan. The Pakistani President at that time, Pervez Musharraf, told him that India would become a superpower under his leadership. He ended up being wrong about that prediction but more than a decade later, Modi is still in power and more than capable of shaping his country’s future. As Prime Minister of India, he is already making changes for good around India and all over South Asia.
Becoming Prime Minister
In 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India was named Person of the Year by Time magazine. The vote was decided on by Time’s editors and readers. With nearly three million votes cast in total, Modi received 18% of all votes and secured first place in both categories. Born into a middle-class family, his mother helped his father run a tea stall to help support their family and he sold tea at railway stations as a child so that he could go to school. He gained experience working for organisations including Banaras Hindu University, The Indian Society for Ecology and Environment, Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation as well as being chairman of Gujarat Tourism before becoming Chief Minister in 2001 then Prime Minister in 2014 when his party received overwhelming popular support (winning almost 70% of all seats)
Policies and Achievements
In 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was widely credited with having pulled off one of India’s greatest political coups: he led his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to a landslide victory in parliamentary elections. Under his stewardship, India has experienced unprecedented growth and seen numerous changes for millions of its citizens. However, critics say that such achievements are not without cost and accuse him of developing policies which favour big business over lower classes. As India gears up for another general election next year, all eyes will be on Modi’s performance and what it means for his future—and perhaps even more importantly—India’s future.
